Reactive Dogs

Training for reactive dogs

Reactivity is one of the hardest behaviours to deal with but have you ever wondered why that is? You may never have even thought about reactivity before you got this dog, but now when your dog starts reacting, you find yourself reacting too!

You may get stressed at the very thought of going for a walk.

Are you worried  what your dog might do?
Are you worried that your dog or someone else might get hurt?

Of course, it is not your dog’s fault. Your dog is acting in response to an emotion – that might be fear, anxiety or frustration – and, when they react, that can make them feel better in the moment so they keep doing it.

But we can teach them a better way.

We can give them new ways to respond that also feel good and over time they can start to ignore what once caused a meltdown or maybe even enjoy meeting other dogs or new people.

In order to make this shift, we need to create a calmer space for our dogs. They can’t learn when they are stressed.

My programmes will give you all the support you need and I am with you every step of the way.

I will help you develop the right skills to teach calm and accommodate your dog’s reactivity! You’ll learn how to keep your dog’s focus when there are distractions, how to manage situations where things are less than ideal and how to bounce back when everything has gone belly up!

Reactivity and Dog Sports

Having a reactive dog is really hard.

Doing sport with a reactive dog is even harder.

Are you worrying about your dog overreacting at a sports event?

Do you worry about people complaining about your dog?
That you might get disqualified from an event or even banned?

All this worrying about your dog affects your performance.

You are tense and so you don’t handle the way you handle in training, and your dogs amazing skills cannot shine because in your head you are preoccupied with the worst case scenario of your dog getting away, behaving badly and people pointing fingers at you.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Both my dogs have successfully competed in Agility in spite of their reactivity to other dogs. Over the last few years I have helped many owners bring out the best in their dogs.

What clients say
With our youngster Sunny being our 10th dog I’m not exactly a novice when it comes to dogs. Sunny, however, presented me with a unique training issue in his over reaction to fencing fighting with our back yard neighbors. After the craziness of COVID life and nearly two years of rehearsing bad behavior my husband and I were at our wit’s end. Along came Barbara’s course on Reframing Reactivity. Not only did she help us with a plan that was doable for us and our lifestyle, she helped me with my mindset regarding our little “project”. Now I have new tools in my tool box that can help not only with the every day triggers but also with the unexpected triggers that we may encounter when we’re out and about. After working thought her class I am happy to report that we can now enjoy the peace and quiet of our back yard with Sunny instead of without him. This course was a true life saver!

"To all frustrated dog owners out there…. I bumped into barbara last year after being to various classes and dog obedience groups. I was tense and anxious every time my dog went off or i was told I'm not doing it right. Barbara said WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO WITH YOUR DOG? With a completely different approach Barbara taught me how to guide my dog. What a pleasure my dog journey has become. Panda is doing so well thanks to Barbara’s guidance. I now realize that it is me who needed training…the dog will follow. THANK YOU BARBARA for seeing Pandas potential and guiding me to get the best out of our dog/owner relationship. If it had not been for YOU Panda might even have been send to dog heaven as a result of my frustration. THANKS THANKS THANKS"
