Management - A Game Changer for Reactive Dogs
Living with a reactive or over-excited dog can be a real challenge, but let’s talk about how setting boundaries can be a total game-changer! In this blog post, we’ll dive into why boundaries are so important for reactive dogs to help dogs feel safe and be more confident.
It doesnt matter wether your dog is reactive, or just a puppy, managing their behaviour is an important part of any training plan We we want to prevent unwanted actions and keep our dogs safe while they learn new ways to cope. So, how can we do that? Well, setting up safe spaces with baby gates or barriers is a great start. Taking walks in less crowded areas can also minimise their exposure to triggers. And hey, if your dog gets a bit too curious or jumpy, putting them on a leash can give you some control. Oh, and if your dog get’s triggered into barking, playing some soothing tunes to drown out scary noises or blocking the windows will help a lot.
Whatever management you implement it is essential that your dog is really comfortable with it.
Management is not lock down. It is not about keeping our reactive dogs in check; they’re really about keeping them safe and happy. By setting clear limits, we create a safe environment where our dogs can relax. It’s important to communicate to others that our dog needs some space, so they don’t overwhelm them. Management is all about protecting your dog from getting into situations they’re not ready for. And guess what? It also prevents others from overwhelming your pup with too much attention. Balance is everything!
Management can go a long way in preventing reactive behaviours, and sometimes it is all you need. But it doesn’t address the underlying issues. Training on the other hand , cannot work when our dogs have been triggered into heightened emotional state. So to truly help our reactive dogs, we need a two-pronged approach: management and training. By using management techniques to protect them from being triggered we can create a training environment that enables them to learn and so we can teach them alternative behaviours and different ways to respond.
If you have more than one dog at home, management is even more important. We want to reduce stress and create a harmonious environment for everyone. Separate feeding areas can help each dog feel relaxed during mealtime. And when it’s playtime, always supervise and keep the sessions short to avoid overexcitement or conflicts. Remember to encourage some chill time in between. Giving each dog their own space can prevent any squabbles over resources or territory. Oh, and don’t forget to spend quality one-on-one time with each pup to strengthen your bond. Taking time to create harmonious home life has a positive impact on other areas, too.
Management really is a game-changer for our reactive dogs, bringing them peace, confidence, and calmer behavior. By combining management with training strategies, we prevent reactive behaviours so that we can get to the root of it, and change our dog’s emotional responses.
And in households with multiple dogs, management reduces stress and promotes harmony.
So, let’s remember that management is vital for the well-being and positive interactions of our reactive dogs. They deserve all the love, support, and safety we can give them!
